Welcome information for the Electron-phonon group: [HERE]Note: For members of the UCLouvain/MODL division, you can also look for compilation instruction on our intranet.
1. Connect yourself to the intranet2. https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/imcn/modl3. Click on "Intranet"4. Click on the document "Compilation and use of codes on clusters" Tips for writing manuscripts
Here are some general suggestions when writing scientific papers.- Upload all your data/script/modified codes to the Materials Cloud archive (https://archive.materialscloud.org/) for reproducibility purposes and reference it in the manuscript with the DOI.
- You can use chatgpt to help you improve/rewrite sentences but write everything yourself first. Do not overuse chatgpt as this can be clearly seen.
- Do not use image extraction for latex equation but write them cleanly.
- Make sure the bibliography is perfect. Using https://www.doi2bib.org is very good but not perfect. Make sure the page number is not missing and the title does not have problematic font. Check every reference.
- Make sure you cite the correct references. Read the reference you are citing to be sure. References suggested by chatgpt are usually not great / relevant.
- When iterating with your co-authors, provide them with a pdf that highlight the changes that you have made. This can be done with "latexdiff manuscript_v1.tex manuscript_v2.tex > diff.tex"
- In equations, use superscript and Roman font for text that describe the quantity. Use subscript for variables.
- In LaTeX, use % to separate each sentence. This allows for a clear reading of your manuscript. This also applies to the caption of figures.
- Add a "~" between text and units (e.g. "10~K") and also for reference (e.g. XX~\cite{YY})
- Software name should be written with \textsc{}, e.g. \textsc{Quantum ESPRESSO}
- Each section of the SI should be referenced in the manuscript and the SI should be ordered in the same order as they appear in the main manuscript.
Good quality figures- Always use cropping for all the images (no white around figures). You can use "pdfcrop Fig1.pdf Fig1.pdf"
- The name of figures should never have space --> fig 1.pdf --> fig1.pdf
- When you have subfigures, if you have a shared axis, remove duplicated values/axis.
- Choose colors wisely. You can use https://colorbrewer2.org
- Your figures should be vectorial and one should be able to edit them with inkscape. Mostly use pdf format. In very rare exceptions, png can be used.
- Always place your figures on the top or bottom of a column, never in the middle. There should never be text above _and_ below a figure.
Bibliography- Call you bibliography file "Bibliography.bib"
- Use "LastnameYEAR" for the tag, e.g. "Ponce2016"
- Make sure the title is correct and does not have weird character. Protect capitalisation when needed with curly brackets, e.g. {EPW} or {MoS$_2$}
- Make sure volume, pages and year are present.
